Turnin’ up the heat in Wisco and Minny

It was a hot weekend of racing in the upper Midwest with the team scoring some nice results.

MONTFORT, WISC — Team members put up some strong finishes in the TT and RR at the Panther Dash in Montfort, Wisc. Julie Phelps took the women’s title in the two-day omnium, scoring a win in the road race and a runner-up slot in the TT.

(It was apparently WiSport jersey day on the team at Sunday’s RR with Jim Frame in his green sprinter’s jersey, Julie Phelps in her Worlds RR jeresy and Chris Mueller in his yellow jersey — all earned duing the 2010 season)

ST. PETER, MINN- Bob Barabe rolled over to the Minnesota State TT Saturday in St. Peter and nabbed an age group win in an uncontested 40K age category.

Since Barabe is from Wisconsin he was ineligible for the state title (you know Bob, the Wisc. State TT is coming up in August!).

MANKATO, MINN – Dave Oachs continues to be on a mountain bike hot streak scoring a 12th-place finish (3rd in age group) at the Bluff Riders Charge MN Mountain Bike Series Race in Mankato, Minn. Sunday afternoon.

Check out the “Race News” Tab at the top of the blog for a full account of team results in 2011. Results from the last week will be available by Wednesday night.

Memorial Day Weekend re-cap

Memorial Day Weekend offered a little racing action for the team with riders in events Wisconsin and Minnesota.

It was a double dose of action Saturday in the western hamlets of the Twin Cities where Brad St. Mane grabbed an 18th place finish in the Watertown Circuit Race of the MN Memorial Classic. He was followed by Matt Christiaansen in 21st position. Both riders were about two seconds off the winner in the Cat. 4/5 division.

Matt Christiaansen then turned around for another 21st place finish in the 8-mile Watertown TT in the afternoon after a late start due to a communication issue.

Sunday’s action moved to a short – but technical – 10-mile time trial in Greenbush, Wisc., where Quentin Gniot rode to a Cat. 5 win on a stock bike, edging out at least two other competitors.

Julie Phelps won women’s Cat. 4 and Nate Phelps won men’s Cat. 4 – both in uncontested fields.

Explosive night at TNT #2

Matt Christiaansen joined about 100 other people Tuesday night at TNT #2 near Medina, Minn.

Christiaansen hammed out a brisk 27:22 time over the rolling 11-mile course for an average speed just over 24.1 mph… and he finished 40th overall. Talk about a tough field.

Big Ring Flyers notch solid week of racing

It’s been a busy — and good! —  week of racing for the team.

Results continue to come in from the weekend and will updated on the Race News Page later this week, but here’s an early look at a few of the team’s tallies (as of Sunday night) from the last four days — and a few misc. photos from the last few days (was it retro BRF jersey weekend?).

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

WITHROW, MINN. — Leah Vizenor made her BRF competitive debut at County Cycles TT #1 Thursday night near Withrow, Minn. She finished 36th overall, 7th in women.

Congrats on the start of her competitive cycling career.

On the men’s side of the house, Matt Christiaansen took an 11th place finish while Bob Maki was 13th. Ron Kadera nabbed 26th just ahead of Bob Barabe in 27th and Varick Olson in 31st.

BURNSVILLE, MINN. — Dave Oachs took another podium (3rd) in the Thursday night MTB races at Buck Hill in Burnsville, Minn., in the Advanced division.

INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, MINN. — Dave Oachs rode a very muddy course (theme here this season?) to a 7th place overall finish in the elite division of the Freewheel Frolic MTB race near Minneapolis Saturday.

He finished 3rd in his age group.

CABLE, WISC. — Jeff Sympson rode to a 21st place finish in the marginally supported Chequamegon 100 in northwestern Wisconsin Saturday.

He covered the 100+ miles of the course in 9:45:09. He then raced the WORS race in Rhinelander Sunday (along with at least two more of our guys).

RHINELANDER, WISC. — A trio of Big Ring Flyers lined up at the Crystal Lake Classic WORS race in Rhinelander Sunday.

Quentin Gniot rode to a 54th place finish in the Sport division (5th in age group).

In the Comp division, Jeff Sympson finished 35th (5th in age group) while Mike Worland came home 69th overall and 12th in his age group.

SUSSEX, WISC. — Nate Phelps nabbed a 9th place finish in the Cat. 4/5 race at the Sussex Crit near Milwaukee Sunday. He turned around and took a 15th place finishing spot in the Masters 4/5 race later in the morning.

Jim “Sausagering” Saueressig made an appearance at the event as a spectator. Look for him to be back in action with the team soon.
